My family always enjoys garlic rice and simple chicken curry for our weekend dinners. However, I take pleasure in savoring the rice on its own. When I was younger, my mom straightforwardly prepared this flavorful rice dish. I’m excited to share my mom’s beloved garlic rice with a few twists today. I hope you find this method both easy and delicious. I also enjoy preparing my beloved chicken fried rice, which is somehow connected to that cuisine. Both dishes are my favorite companions for the weekend.

What is special about the garlic butter recipe?
Well. There are a lot of benefits of garlic itself, but when it comes to garlic butter rice, trust me, you won’t regret trying this amazing recipe.
Easy to make
This is a recipe that only takes 20 minutes. There are simple steps to follow, without any complicated techniques involved.
Fragrant and flavoursome rice
This rich, buttery rice with a hint of garlic offers a delicious taste that delights your palate in each grain. Not only are they flavorful, but they also release an enticing aroma. It will fill your entire kitchen with fragrance and captivate your senses.
Health Benefits of Garlic
Incorporating garlic into meals can aid in lowering cholesterol levels in the blood, decrease blood pressure, and contribute to overall health maintenance.
Required Ingredients
Basmati rice
I usually prefer aged basmati rice for my rice meals since it cooks wonderfully with its elongated grains. Jasmine rice can also be a good alternative, but it requires less water during cooking.
Butter (unsalted)
I usually choose unsalted butter since we can adjust the salt later on. To start, we’ll sauté onion and minced garlic in butter. Finally, for an extra buttery flavor, we will place a small cube of butter on the cooked rice to let it melt. But if you have only salted butter in your pantry, then adjust the salt in the recipe to avoid over-salty meals.
Oil usage
I like to use just 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil mixed with butter for sautéing onions and minced garlic. You can replace it with regular cooking oil if you wish.
Garlic
I typically like to chop garlic finely with a knife. Since we’re utilizing oil and butter, there will be a sufficient amount of fat to sauté the garlic until it becomes aromatic and just begins to change color. I wouldn’t recommend using pre-made garlic paste from the store, as it won’t yield the desired results for this recipe. Only fresh garlic will bring this dish to perfection.
Chicken stock
Chicken broth is an excellent choice for cooking rice, even without chicken, as it imparts a deep flavor. If chicken broth isn’t available, you can dissolve a chicken bouillon cube in one cup of water. For a completely vegetarian option, use vegetable broth instead. Many people appreciate the convenience of chicken powder, so you can use it if you’d like (1 tablespoon is suggested).
Soya sauce
Soy sauce is a great but optional choice, but I enjoy drizzling it over cooked rice. I appreciate its slightly tangy flavor. It pairs wonderfully with garlic.
Onion
To start, gently sauté one small chopped onion until it turns a light golden brown, then add minced garlic to create an ideal garlicky taste.

Pro tip
It’s best to use garlic cloves as needed. According to my measurement, I require 3-4 cloves minced finely. Adding excessive garlic can overpower the rice, leaving it with an intense, lingering taste.
How to make butter garlic rice (Step by Step)
We will make this recipe with a simple brown rice method with a few changes.
Rinsing and Soaking
Since we are utilizing aged basmati rice, it is essential to rinse and soak it. Initially, we will wash them under running water to eliminate any potential dirt particles. After that, we will soak them for 15 minutes.

Sauteing
In a saucepan, heat 3-4 tablespoons of oil along with 3 tablespoons of butter on low heat until melted, then add 1 small finely chopped onion. Allow the onion to cook until it begins to change color. Next, incorporate some freshly minced garlic. Sauté the garlic in the butter for about 30 seconds, until it releases a delightful aroma and turns golden. Be careful not to overcook it, as it may impart a bitter taste to the rice.

Add (liquid chicken stock)
Once the garlic starts to fragrant, add 1 cup of chicken stock. Add 1 tbsp of salt. Add the rest of the water and wait until it starts bubbling. Then add drained, soaked rice. Stir it. Set the stove to a high flame.

Cook rice for 15 minutes
When the flame is high, rice begins to cook in rapidly boiling water. Taste it to determine if salt needs to be added for adjustment. A small amount of water will remain as the rest will evaporate. Gently stir the rice to ensure there isn’t too much leftover water, but allow it to steam.

Dum or steam the rice
Put the lid on, and steam it at a very low temperature for 5-6 minutes.

Fluff up the rice
When the rice has taken in all the water, remove it from the heat and fluff the rice. Sprinkle soy sauce over cooked rice. Add a small pat of butter to the rice and stir it gently until the butter is fully melted, and garnish with fresh parsley.

Tips to note
- Refrain from using excessive garlic, as its overpowering flavor may prevent you from achieving delicious rice.
- When sautéing garlic, be sure to cook it until it turns a light golden brown; otherwise, it may impart a bitter flavor to the dish.
- If you’re using basmati rice, soak it for 15 minutes to achieve longer grains.
- Always opt for unsalted butter, as it mixes well and allows us to control the salt level.

Notes

- Be cautious when using lengthy, deep pots to prepare rice, as the rice at the bottom can become wet and mushy, leading to inconsistently cooked rice.
- You can omit soy sauce if you’re not fond of a slightly tangy taste.
- For a richer, buttery flavor, consider adding an extra 1 to 2 tablespoons.
- If you don’t like parsley topping, then skip it.
